Frequently Asked Questions
Choosing aftercare for your pet can bring up many questions. Below are answers to some of the most common ones we receive. If you don’t see what you’re looking for, we’re always happy to talk.
Are ashes returned to the family, like with flame cremation?
Yes. A powdered ash is returned to the family in much the same way as with traditional flame cremation. The ashes consist of pure calcium phosphate, derived from the mineral content of the bones. They are 100% safe to handle and are free from pathogens and disease. Because Aquamation® does not involve flame, families typically receive approximately 20% more ashes compared to flame cremation. The ashes are often lighter in color, as there is no carbon discoloration from fire. Families may choose to keep the ashes in an urn, bury them, or scatter them in a special place meaningful to them.
Why is Aquamation® considered an environmentally friendly choice?
Aquamation® is widely recognized as a more environmentally responsible alternative to flame cremation. The process: • Produces no direct emissions of harmful greenhouse gases or mercury • Uses no fossil fuels • Consumes less water than a single household uses in one day • Uses over 90% less energy than flame cremation • Has approximately one-tenth the carbon footprint of traditional cremation By accelerating a natural process, Aquamation® offers a gentler option with significantly reduced environmental impact.
How long has this process been used?
Alkaline Hydrolysis has a long and established history. • Used by universities and scientific institutions for over 25 years • Used for human body donation to medical science since 1995 • First pet Aquamation® facility opened in 2007 • First funeral home adopted the process in 2011 This is a well-established and trusted technology, not a new or experimental method.
Why do families choose this option?
Families who choose Aquamation® often share that: • They appreciate having a choice in aftercare • They prefer a process that does not use fire or flame • They value receiving more of their pet’s ashes returned to them • They feel it is a gentler and more peaceful option • They are drawn to the reduced environmental impact For many families, Aquamation® aligns closely with their values and the way they wish to honor their pet’s life.
